- What is the Bittensor EVM?
- Bittensor's EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) layer runs Solidity contracts on top of the Substrate-based Subtensor chain. Every EVM transaction is wrapped in a substrate Ethereum.transact extrinsic, so each EVM action has both an EVM-side and a substrate-side view. The EVM layer enables familiar Solidity tooling (Hardhat, ethers, viem) to interact with the Bittensor network.
- How do EVM and substrate identities relate?
- Every EVM address (0x…) on Bittensor has a substrate (SS58) account derived from it, shown as the "derived SS58" on each transaction. When an EVM transaction stakes or unstakes through the staking precompile, the page also shows the "coldkey of record": the coldkey the staking action was recorded for. It is not proof of who owns the stake. For a router or vault contract it is the contract's own account, and on a stake transfer between coldkeys it is the sender, not the receiver.
- What can I find in the EVM explorer?
- Transactions (EVM transfers, contract calls, contract deployments), logs (events emitted by contracts), contracts (with source verification, deployer and creation block), and blocks with EVM activity. A transaction opens on the page of the extrinsic that carried it, an address or contract on its account page, and a block on its block page.
